Syracuse, NY - Maine-Endwell reeled off four touchdowns in the game's opening minutes and coasted to a 54-19 season-opening victory over Marcellus at the Carrier Dome Sunday evening.
After forcing Marcellus to punt away its first possession of the game, the Spartans worked their way to midfield, where quarterback Kyle Gallagher cut through the defense for a 50-yard touchdown run just over two minutes into the contest. The Spartans then recovered a Marcellus fumble, and Justin Jacoby scampered 33 yards for another touchdown roughly two minutes later.
On the following series, Darnell Woolfolk picked off Mustangs quarterback Duncan Merritt and carried the ball into the end zone, putting M-E up 20-0 following a missed extra point.
The Mustangs then fumbled away an onsides kick by the Spartans, allowing M-E to regain possession in Marcellus territory. Shortly after that, Kyle Gallagher fired a 40-yard TD pass to his brother Adam, and it was 27-0 M-E with 6:43 left in the first quarter.
A 10-yard TD run by Nick Sorrenti with one minute left in the opening quarter and a seven-yard rushing score by Luis Uceta roughly 90 seconds into the second pushed the lead to 41-0, at which point Spartans head coach Matt Gallagher sat his starters for the rest of the game. It was 47-0 Maine-Endwell at the half thanks to a 19-yard dash by Woolfolk with 4:55 remaining in the second.
The Mustangs notched three second-half scores against the Spartans backups, sandwiched around a 98-yard kickoff return by Jacoby for his second touchdown of the game.
Maine-Endwell will host Chenango Valley on Saturday at 1:30pm. Listen to the game on RLM Sports, with our pregame show starting at 1:15.
